Ambulance Care Assistants

The Ambulance Person will convey non-emergency patients to and from hospital and clinic appointments and ensuring the patient’s welfare in transit.

 

The Ambulance Person is an integral part of the non-emergency patient transport service team. They will work towards the goals of the patient transport service in Surrey, ensuring a safe, comfortable and efficient service is provided.

 

Role in Detail

  • Drive an ambulance or ambulance car.
  • Operate interchangeably as either driver or attendant in a single person or 2- person ambulance crew.
  • Physically lift patients when required using the appropriate equipment and approved manual handling techniques.
  • Assist patients – who may be ambulatory or wheelchair bound – into and out of the vehicle and ensure that they are safely seated whilst in transit.
  • Convey stretcher bound patients into and off vehicle.
  • Assist patients when entering and leaving their homes and take all reasonable actions to ensure the safety and security of their property.
  • Liase with control via mobile telephone and respond appropriately to instructions.
  • Upon arrival at the place of treatment, convey patients to the appropriate location within the building as directed by Control.
  • Follow all appropriate safety procedures and report any potential hazards or possible misuse of the service to the Service Delivery Manager.
  • Maintain daily written records of work schedules.
  • Carry out daily maintenance and safety checks to vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain vehicle to required state of hygiene and cleanliness.
  • Carry out any other duties relevant to the role as directed by Control and/ or the Service Delivery Manager.

Person Specification

 

  • Full driving license required (including categories C1 & D1)

 

  • Experience of similar related role

 

  • Good communicator

 

  • Application of common sense approach

 

  • Physically fit with a caring attitude towards patients and an outgoing, friendly manner.

 

  • The job also requires that crew members are flexible to fit in with fluctuation in service demand or operational need on the contract, i.e. a flexible working pattern

 

  • Basic literacy and numeracy are required. Formal qualifications (apart from a full, current UK driving licence) are less important than the appropriate manner and attitude to patients, clients and colleagues.

 

  • The post holder must be willing to undergo suitable training including Manual Handling, Risk Assessment, Customer Services, client induction, advanced driving and first aid.

 

A high proportion of patients will be frail and vulnerable. A Criminal Records Bureau check will therefore be required to exclude any individual with a history of criminal behaviour which could be considered unacceptable (by GSL or the clients) in a patient care environment.

Please note that the Patients Transport Service is provided on a 24 hour basis throughout the year and therefore some rotational shift working may be required. These vacancies are subject to a 10 year checkable history and the strict vetting standards set by GSL and the Secretary of State for the Home Office.
