Children's services
Rainsbrook & Medway
There are two education centres at each establishment comprising 18 teaching rooms which include a library and library resource room, hair and beauty salon, food technology, craft, design technology, performing arts, music and IT. In addition there are tutorial and study rooms that are used by students who are preparing for specific exams. There is a gymnasium, a fitness centre, an outdoor all-weather pitch and a basketball area. The ‘village green’ provides the facility for a larger children’s play area.
Teaching staff provide a broad and balanced curriculum for the young people that is based, where possible, on the requirements of the National Curriculum and is appropriate to their age, ability and levels of attainment.
All trainees are assessed on entry. Learning styles and any issues are identified and trainees who struggle with literacy and/or numeracy may be targeted for 1:1 withdrawal sessions to support them in these areas.
Everyone has the opportunity to gain accreditation, both nationally recognised and internal certificates in all subject areas. Many of the young people take Entry Level Certificates each year and everyone works towards AQA Unit awards across the curriculum. There are also opportunities to study for GCSEs in several subject areas such as: English, English literature, maths, science, art, sociology and PE. Additional lessons are offered to young people who are working towards these qualifications. Young people studying for GCSE examinations complete coursework requirements and are set work to assist in their exam preparation.
A Connexions careers and guidance worker attends the centres each week and all the young people have an interview as part of the service offered.
The education department aims to ensure that young people leave the centres having experienced measurable success in their education and a positive view of realistic options and opportunities.
