Building schools for the future

Building schools for the Future (BSF) is a new strategic approach to capital investment in school buildings that will create the environment for the government's agenda of educational transformation.

BSF is the biggest single government investment in improving school buildings for over 50 years. The aim is to rebuild or renew every secondary school in England over a 15-year period. The schools will have high quality facilities and integrated information technology to help deliver personalised learning tailored to the needs, interests and aptitudes of every child.

180 schools across England (in 14 different Councils) are to benefit from over £2 billion of investment into school buildings in the first wave which started in 2005/6.

GSL has been involved in a number of the initial 14 projects and has successfully reached preferred bidder at Leicester City Council BSF where GSL is an equity participant in the Miller consortium. BSF Leicester is a Wave 1 project with four phases of build from 2006 to 2011/12 where all the necessary funding has already been agreed.

It involves refurbishing 10 secondary schools (known as Design and Build), and rebuilding a further five (known as Public Finance Initiative (PFI)). The project also includes the refurbish/ rebuild of a number of Special Needs Schools (SENs).
