Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford
The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre is a specialist teaching hospital with an international reputation for the quality of its clinical services, teaching and research. Clinical services include comprehensive elective orthopaedic services, rheumatology and a range of services for people with disabilities. The site provides the base for the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedic Surgery (part of the University of Oxford). The Trust provides secondary elective orthopaedic services to a population of over 600,000 in Oxfordshire and from parts of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire. More specialist tertiary services are provided to a much wider population and referrals for some services come from all over England and Wales.
The GSL contract was to redevelop the orthopaedic and medical facilities on the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre site in Headington, Oxford. This was a PFI contract for the provision of serviced accommodation. The award winning design provides completely new facilities with the flexibility and adaptability to accommodate future healthcare needs whilst satisfying all existing statutory requirements for hospital design. The development was named the best health project under £45m by the Private Finance Initiative industry.
The new facility provides 134 inpatient beds, six operating theatres, a new imaging centre (x-ray and MRI) as well as new facilities for outpatient and therapy services.
